01 · The examination

What the vetting includes

The examination follows a standard protocol in two parts: a clinical examination and X-rays. Extra tests can be added when you want more certainty.

Part 1

Clinical examination

A thorough check of the organ systems, skeleton, legs and hooves. Then the horse is assessed moving on hard and soft ground, including flexion tests.

Part 2

X-rays on location

With the mobile digital X-ray unit, Arjon takes and grades radiographs of the legs and, if you wish, the back and neck. The images are on screen straight away.

On request

Extra tests and video

Ultrasound of tendons and ligaments, endoscopy of the airways, blood tests or a Sleip motion analysis. The clinical part can also be filmed.

Why at the yard? After a trailer ride a horse often moves differently than at home. On its own yard it is usually calmer, so you see how it really moves.

02 · Step by step

From request to report

You don’t have to travel to the Netherlands for the examination. This is how a vetting for a buyer abroad usually goes.
  1. 01

    Request

E-mail, call or WhatsApp us: which horse, where it stands, the seller’s contact details and when you need the result.

  2. 02

    Clinical examination

At the yard where the horse stands: at rest, in movement on hard and soft ground, and with flexion tests.

  3. 03

    X-rays

Taken on site with the mobile X-ray unit. Arjon assesses them and discusses what he sees.

  4. 04

    Written report

You receive the findings in writing, and Arjon explains them to you, so you know where you stand.

Questions

Questions from buyers abroad

Something else you’d like to know? Just ask, in English.
Do I need to be there in person?

It helps, but you can also send your agent, trainer or rider. Afterwards Arjon talks you through the findings.

Is the report in English?

Ask about this when you request the vetting.

Can my own vet see the X-rays?

Yes. The X-rays are digital, so they can be sent to your own vet at home for a second opinion.

Can the horse be examined at the seller’s yard?

Yes, that is how it normally works: Arjon comes to the yard where the horse stands. Send us the address and the seller’s contact details, and we plan a date that suits everyone.

What does a pre-purchase examination cost?

That depends on the extent: clinical only, with X-rays, or with extra tests such as ultrasound or endoscopy. Ask for the price when you send your request, so you know the cost beforehand.

Which terms apply?

Equi-Medic works under the standard terms for Dutch veterinarians of the KNMvD (Royal Netherlands Veterinary Association), under Dutch law. The report is for the person who orders the examination. The terms are in Dutch.
